Remembering our Director, Steve Young (1957-2016)

Stephen Young, 59, of Oreland, PA, originally from Broomall, PA, Director of Campus Recreation at Temple University in Philadelphia, passed away Wednesday May 18th after a 5 year courageous battle against cancer.

After graduating from West Chester University, Steve worked as a wilderness instructor at Outward Bound style programs across the East Coast before achieving his Master’s Degree in Recreation Administration at Temple University in 1985.  Assuming the title of Campus Recreation Director in 1990, Steve helped bring major recreation facilities to students and employees on Temple’s Main Campus and co-founded the City 6 Extramural Classic bringing competition and comradery to the Philadelphia collegiate recreation arena.  His 32 year career at Temple was focused on providing quality access to recreation in an urban area and to enable student staff and employees to develop interpersonal and leadership skills necessary for their professional development. Steve was a mentor to many, from his role at Temple to his involvement with the National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association.

He was also active in his community through his sons involvements in various activities, including Oreland-Wyndmoor Little League, Holy Martyrs CYO basketball, LaSalle College High School Men of LaSalle.

Beloved husband of Marianne Young ( nee Hunter ); devoted father of Colin R. and Timothy H. Young; loving brother of Debra Leech. Also survived by his beloved Newfoundland, Tugger.
