Swim for MS

By: Erica Rudy, Campus Recreation Community Service CREW member

Swim for MS is a water-based event that can be done in any pool, at any time. Campus Recreation’s Community Service Crew has hosted a Swim for MS day, during regular pool hours at Pearson Pool 30, for the past few years. While each year has been a success, we need your help in continuing this success for the 2016 MS Awareness Month of March.

My coworker, Ann Rejrat, has a sister who was diagnosed with MS. When asked about that experience, Anne responded, "My sister lost her ability to walk, talk, or even eat only a few years after graduating from Temple as a member of the women's rowing team. While it's in remission now, no one knows when, or if it's going to happen again or what her quality of life will be next year or the year after. Some people have conditions that continue to get worse until they are bedridden and pass with no remission. The disease is complicated and not the same for everyone. There is no cure; only medicine to help those living with MS to try to manage some symptoms."

The Multiple Sclerosis Association of America (MSAA) does so much for those living with Multiple Sclerosis. If you are unfamiliar, there are many hospital costs associated with this disease, including periodic MRIs and medicines to manage symptoms. These costs add up, and MSAA utilizes Swim for MS to help those with the disease pay for these medical costs. Like Ann said, there is no cure, but Swim for MS aids those to live the best life possible.

On March 16, 2016, Campus Recreation’s Community Service Crew will be hosting a Swim for MS event that benefits the Multiple Sclerosis Association of America (MSAA). The event will be held during regular Pool 30 hours. We are asking that you sign up for this event, as a means of donating to this amazing organization that does so much for those living with this disease. The pool is located in the basement of Pearson and McGonigle Halls.

If you are able to donate and participate in the event, please do so! You can sign up by visiting http://support.mymsaa.org/goto/templecrec and use “TU2016” as the discount code.
